I also wanted to use a gray background but covid had other plans! I'm not able to go out and shop and I didn't want to have to try and do the matching over the internet. Instead I went with a tone on tone white.

I love color - but I will say I don't think choosing and matching them is my strong point. Although I do think I am slowly learning. Allison has a really great blog post on how she picks colors (link below) and the way she uses 'connecting' fabrics really clicked for me. And hello - the color wheel!
